Roque Nublo on Gran Canaria

The Roque Nublo (Cloud Rock) is a mountain about 1800 metres high on the island of Gran Canaria in the Atlantic Ocean, which belongs to Spain. Its basalt summit rock, which is mostly shrouded in clouds, is considered the island’s landmark. It rises about 65 metres above its surroundings, a flat plateau.

Before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors at the end of the 15th century, Roque Nublo was revered as a sacred mountain by the island’s indigenous people, the Canarios. They had a place of worship here where sacrifices were made to the sun god.

Even today, you feel a sense of awe when you stand in front of this monolith, which is usually shrouded in mist.
